Static Line

Static lines give much less stretch than dynamic ropes. Dynamic ropes are meant to stretch and absorb energy. Static ropes are meant to stay the way you placed them (i.e. little movement), which is a great feature when a weighted line goes over a cliff edge. All static line is not created equally: diameter, strength, pliability, durability, and length are all factors in determining what to buy. We sell Sterling’s 9mm HTP static line because of it’s durability and weight to strength ratio.

Static Line Considerations

  • Diameter affects weight and strength but mostly durability.

    • 10mm diameter static line will take abuse and is super strong but the packing bulk and weight are negatives.

    • 9mm offers the best of everything and is what we recommend.

    • 8mm is light and packable, though strength and durability are major considerations.

  • Strength is sometimes overlooked. Your static line needs to be able to exceed any of the load expectations it may encounter. A conservative target of 20kN will accommodate normal climbing scenarios.

  • Multiple uses: can you use your static line as a safety or rappel line with a GriGri or Guide ATC? 9mm allows both of these scenarios, though at both of their low working ends.

  • The length of your static line is a major factor to consider. Too short, well obviously this either means you change plans and climb something else or up the use of other rigging resources and string things together in a much more complex anchor. Too long, gets you dagger eyes from whomever carried up that extra weight and lots of rats nests in your rope. Each climbing area has preferred static line lengths so make sure to research before hand. A 60’ static line is perfect for Devil’s Lake.

*9mm is the sweet spot between strength, durability, and weight. Made out of a polyester core and sheath the HTP’s supple nature makes it a joy to tie knots in. Available in 60’ or 150’ lengths. (Note - the white is a little cheaper than the others for the budget conscience.)*
