Introduction

We've assembled this visual equipment list to help you, our Wilderness First Responder students, ensure you have what you need for a safe, comfortable, and successful learning experience.

Helpful Equipment for WFR students

You don’t strictly need all these items, but consider whether they will help set you up for success.

PENS & PENCILS: For taking notes during lectures and field simulations.

HIGHLIGHTERS: For marking up your personal WFR textbook.

NOTEBOOK: For taking notes during lectures and field simulations.

FINE SHARPIE: These work best for writing in your WFR field guide.

CLIPBOARD: Optional tool for outdoor scenarios.

EYE PROTECTION: Shades or other eye protection.

WATCH: For counting seconds on respiration, pulse, etc. A phone can work too, but a watch is ideal.

DAY PACK: For carrying items during simulations.

CHAIR: A lawn chair or camp chair makes outdoor class activities more comfortable.

CLOSED-TOE SHOES: We’ll be outside in varied conditions, sometimes in thick brush, mud, or snow.

DISPOSABLE OUTFIT: One set of clothes that can be cut up or stained. *These are not used on every course, but having them available can make scenarios more realistic.

CLOTHING LAYERS & OUTERWEAR: We’ll be outside rain or shine during the day/evening. As a patient, you may be lying on the ground for extended time without insulation.

SLEEPING PAD/MAT: Some people prefer to add padding to make the bunkhouse bunks more comfortable.

SELF CARE ITEMS: Sunblock, lotion, or anything else that will enhance your outdoor comfort.

Equipment to Make Your Stay More Comfortable

Hoofbeat Ridge bunkhouses are solidly built and water-tight, furnished with old-school bunkbeds and plastic mattresses. They do not provide linens, so make a plan to bring what you need to be comfortable.
