Climb Independently

Learn how to set top-rope anchors so you can climb on your own

Anchors I

2017 Open Enrollment Courses: 5/20, 6/3, 6/17, 7/1, 7/15, 7/29, 8/12, 8/26, 9/9, 9/23

The ability to build safe, dependable anchors separates climbing leaders from other climbers. This course is the first in a progression that helps you develop fundamental anchor skills from the ground up.

We start by getting familiar with knots and core equipment, explore anchor theory, and build simple anchor systems. We discuss and apply natural anchor techniques (like trees and rocks) and introduce protection like nuts, hexes, cams, and tricams so you can start practicing placements. The experiential course format involves lots of hands-on practice with gear and concepts, making sure you can apply concepts and have lots of opportunities for practice.

While most students will feel comfortable building simple anchors at the completion of this course, we recommend taking at least Anchors II before leading independent climbing days.

Anchors II

2017 Open Enrollment Courses: 5/21, 6/4, 6/18, 7/2, 7/16, 7/30, 8/13, 8/27, 9/10, 9/24

Anchors II takes the concepts from Anchors I and incorporates a wide array of climbing hardware into the mix. We’ll discuss and demonstrate the specifics of placing nuts, hexes, cams, and tricams, including lots of ways to use these tools safely and creatively. After a thorough training in hardware placement, students will practice building more complex anchors with these tools. Ample group and one-on-one feedback gives you a strong concept of how well you are understanding and applying the concept, as we model positive, encouraging critique that enables strong learning, insight, and growth.
